QUESTION:
How do we define material desires? Material goods in general or the evil and immoral acts that we do along with their relevant (bad) thoughts, to acquire the material goods that we want?
ANSWER:
There is a difference between material desires and our biotic needs.
As a start we will have to define the concept of MEASURE in our behavior. Meaning the balanced behavior.
Our every act that exceeds this measure, balance, starts to become problematic.
Example:
We need to eat to survive.
But when gluttony governs us, then we cease to serve our biotic need and we are subject to passion.
We need to be clothed, but the ongoing concern about our appearance, stimulates self-love.
We need a transport vehicle to move, but clinging to the most impressive, the most beautiful and fastest model, ties us to matter.
The same principal applies to all our needs. Each redundancy feeds passion. We must therefore set for all our needs an imaginary boundary line beyond which we will have to realize we have exceeded that measure.
But this is the first part of this basic exercise. Because we should have in mind that –in the case of a shortage- the arrogation of even our basic needs could potentially lead us to extreme behaviors.
There, a different chapter of self-control applies… that requires a lot of self-knowledge.
So we come to another issue that has to do with the MANNER in which we claim these goods, which (manner) should always be under our absolute control.
Every man must initially detect the feelings/desires that cause him to divert from the identified measure, in order to satisfy them.
Then he will easily see that behind every emotion like that hides a passion.
All passions and desires, tie us to matter, like anchors. No matter how loud someone yells that he wants to redeem his soul, if he constantly feeds his passions, it is as if he builds the walls of his prison ever stronger.
But I think that the realization of the Truth that man lives in a virtual reality which is projected in its entirety from his material brain, helps him to weaken his passions, since he realizes that the material objects he is attracted to are simply ghosts and that he is trapped by them.
The less we are content with, the richer and happier we become.
When passions, desires and weaknesses dominate man, then the mind begins to be controlled by them. The thoughts become aggressive and weave another level of entrapment for man, because they are mainly focused on the ways that will satisfy these passions and weaknesses, but at that level, the “moral” factor is gone.
With the disappearance of morals and morality, virtue is lost and the Soul ceases to feed its Spiritual (indivisible) part, which slowly deteriorates. The soul is then left only with its energy (divisible) part, which drags and sinks her in dense matter trapping her indefinitely.
